Laboratoire de l'innovation urbaine de Montréal

The Laboratoire d’innovation urbaine (LIUM) is accelerating Montréal’s transformation. It is a space where residents, companies, municipal staff and partners are invited to co-create a city that is more people-focused, innovative, open and efficient.

LIUM’s activities lie in the areas of food, mobility, digital technology, data and regulatory experimentation.

Mission

Promote the emergence of innovative solutions in concert with residents, municipal teams and partners in an effort to meet leading urban challenges.

Data driving innovation and transformation

Our team uses data as a transformation tool in support of individual and collective decision-making. It coordinates the open-data approach in order to better understand community issues. For instance, publishing data on mobility (i.e., networks, obstacles, cycling), housing sanitation, crime or air quality provides access to information and promotes the development of inclusive and sustainable urban projects as well as democracy and citizen participation.

Design and experimentation

The LIUM uses a co-creation approach to generate and test new ideas that have an impact on the city. Our team holds workshops with project stakeholders in an joint effort to identify needs and design solutions. For example, the team organizes work sessions with blue collar workers, managers and experts aimed at reflecting upon the city’s ecological transition.

Monitoring and critical assessment of emerging innovations and technologies

The LIUM counts on an innovation community whose members search for and experiment with solutions, and evaluate their social and institutional impacts. The objective is to draw on technological advances for purposes of rethinking the city while minimizing the negative impacts of these technologies and innovations.
